Alloa Welcomes Alworths

Thousands of local residents and visitors flocked to the opening of the new Alworths store during very busy trading in Alloa.  Hundreds of eager shoppers started queuing on Wednesday morning prior to the 10am store opening - with the first 200 customers receiving a free pick and mix.  Prior to the store opening the gathering crowds were treated to  musical hits from the Proclaimers.

Alworths is the latest store to be welcomed into Alloa Town Centre, becoming the newest BID member in Alloa.  Alworths Managing Director Andy Latham was welcomed to Alloa Town Centre by BID Manager Andrew Mitchell, Provost Derek Stewart and Councillor Kenneth Earl, all of whom were looking forward to the continued growth and development of Alloa Town Centre.

Alworths store has helped to encourage shoppers into the Shillinghill area of the town, helping other local businesses by attracting increasing the levels of footfall past their premises.  Alworths has filled a large retail unit in the town centre, formally Ethel Austin who went into receivership at a national level.

There's has been a lot of reported interest in the remaining vacant shops in Alloa Town Centre.  Rumours are circulating throughout the town are that Matalan and Witherspoons are currently looking for suitable premises. Managing Director Andy Latham outlined his vision for the Alworths brand throughout the UK and Andy is very keen for his store employees to become involved at a local level through the BID to help improve Alloa town centre.

Bus shelters throughout Clackmannanshire are displaying posters carrying the message that Alloa Town Centre is back open for business.  The posters aim to encourage more members of the public to shop in the town after the completion of the town centre's £2.4 million improvement works last month.

In a survey by the Wee County News, many traders said the building work had scared many customers away from the town and towards retail parks, However Andrew Mitchell from BID is urging more peoplr to shop locally.  He said: "We want to get the message out that the town is back open for business and encourage people who haven't seen the improved town centre to come down and have a look".
